Aircraft Data Fusion Addresses EFB Working Group in Singapore
Views the electronic flight bag as one component of larger
decision support system that integrates the aircraft with the
enterprise.
Minneapolis – November 19, 2002 – At the recent EFB Working
Group meeting held in Singapore, ADF president and founder Duane Edelman
addressed more than 60 participants on its vision of electronic flight
bag technologies as only one small part of a larger class of Aircraft
Decision Support Systems that integrate the aircraft with the
enterprise. The EFB Working Group is an international, industry-wide
association of professionals focused on the development and
implementation of electronic flight bag technology.
In his plenary session “Airline Infrastructure Requirements,” Mr.
Edelman focused on each phase of implementing EFB applications,
including needs assessment and cost/benefit analysis; system design and
implementation; and ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement. At
the heart of the ADF business case is the notion that decision-support
technologies will drive productivity and efficiencies that reduce costs
and enhance safety and situational awareness, and significantly reducing
infrastructure requirements and delays inherent in the decision-making
process.
Mr. Edelman guided the participants through scenarios in maintenance,
dispatch, and training, showing examples of how intelligent application
of technologies, including EFB displays, can automate routine,
time-intensive and paper-intensive processes.
“Industry interest in the EFB technologies has been growing
steadily,” said Mr. Edelman, “but the focus is largely still on
replacing paper with data displays. That’s a step in the right
direction, but in ADF’s view that’s too limited a vision. We need to
look at the big picture – an integrated enterprise network that includes
the aircraft itself as a node on the enterprise network, which both
provides and makes use of mission-critical data, and which can drive
business decisions and therefore have a huge impact on an airline’s
productivity, efficiency and cost structure.”
